Stop Living Life Through A Screen

People no- a- days are so obsessed with screens and technology. We literally can't go a day without using some sort of screen. Whether it's a phone, computer, tv, etc. We've become so controlled by technology that we can't even imagine living without it. It's the first thing many people do when they get up; check their texts, check Facebook, Twitter, whatever. It's also the last thing we do at night. We sit back and watch TV or chill on the computer. Our lives revolve around screens. So much so that it becomes more important than the people around us.

I wish we could go back to the old days. Before there was any internet, before phones and computers. Yes, life was more difficult. They had to actually figure things out on their own, but they lived in the moment. To meet new people they couldn't just send a friend request they had to actually get the courage to go up to them and say 'hi' and because of that, relationships would last longer, and they would be really true friendships instead of just a 'Facebook friend' you occasionally message. Instead of Googling a recipe or directions they had to actually communicate with other people and ask them. They had to actually socialize or figure things out on their own. And though it may have been harder and more difficult, at least they were living in reality instead of through a screen. Easier isn't always better. Making yourself figure things out for yourself or having to ask others for help is so much better for you, and will make you so much smarter than relying on the internet. Our generation is constantly talking about how people before us were so stupid-- that because they didn't have the technology we have today, they must have been idiots. The ones who actually lived real life; who worked hard for the things they got; who didn't depend on a screen to cure their boredom; the ones who didn't even have time to be bored because they were constantly working to feed and clothe their families--They weren't the idiots. We are. We are the ones who literally depend on screens and the internet to survive. How would we cope if it was just taken away from us for one day? People would be going insane. They would have no idea what to do with themselves and they would be so miserable. We've become so attached to screens and internet that it's become more important than other things. It's become so much more important than people and life. We get so revolved around what's happening online that we miss what's happening around us. Screens put so much strain on relationships. Because our relationships with our phone or computers have become more important than our relationship with people. We've started to idolize our phones and computers so much that our relationship with God, family and friends are suffering. And most people don't even notice it. They don't realize how much they're missing out because some sort of screen has gotten in the way. We blindly let technology take control of us, and we don't even care or notice.

I can't go anywhere anymore without seeing someone on their phone. Going to the store I see a daughter shopping with her mom, but instead of enjoying her Mom's company and talking to her she's taken this time to text her friend. Or when a group of friends decide to go out to dinner together, instead of talking they're taking pictures of their food or checking out Facebook. The ages of the people doing this are getting younger and younger and the number is just growing. I've seen ten year old's on their phones texting friends. Already at that young age they've started depending on screen and already have started to ignore the world around them. Young kids have gotten so addicted to screens too that they don't even no what it means to 'use their imagination' anymore.

We need to stop, take a step back from the screens, and look at the world around us. Focus on the things that are more important in life. God, family and friends. Stop letting screens blindly control us anymore. Show it that it doesn't control you, and that you know what is really and truly important. Put the screen down and look around at the wonderful beautiful world God created for us. He didn't intend for us to sit around and ignore the world around us. He meant for us to live life for Him, to enjoy people around us and to just enjoy real life. Live life in the moment, not on a screen.

Oh, and listen to Rhett and Link.... ;)

What if we just went ONE day without using any screen? This would mean no TV, Phones(for more than just a phone), tablets, computers, and any kind of gaming device. Just one day. I wonder how we'd handle it. I've been thinking of planning a day that people just get off their screens and enjoy life. Who wants to join me? We'll decide on one day that we promise to stay away from any kind of screen and just spend the time we would on the screen with our family and friends. Enjoying life in the moment. Who's with me?
